Rule

Residents are encouraged to sustain relationships inside the residence and with others in the external recovery community

Levels

I

II

IV

This rule applies to all levels.

Guidance

“The opposite of addiction is connection”. Studies show that recovery outcomes improve when someone has genuine friend(s) supportive of their recovery. From a social model perspective, recovery residences should be facilitating those recovery supportive connections from the day a new resident moves-in to the day they move-out and beyond. How a recovery residence encourages cultural norms across the community and instills this value within an individual resident can greatly differ.

Evaluation

Is there evidence that residents are encouraged to sustain relationships inside the residence and with others in the external recovery community?

Evidence

Evidence that this rule is upheld should be documented in the resident packet, the leadership manual and the accreditation interview.
