Rule

Documentation that residents are encouraged to do at least one of the following:

Work, go to school, or volunteer outside of the residence (level Is, IIs and some IIIs)
Participate in mutual aid or caregiving (All levels)
Participate in social, physical or creative activities (All levels)
Participate in daily or weekly community activities (All levels)
Participate in daily or weekly programming (level III’s and IV’s)

This rule applies to all recovery residence levels of support.

Guidance

Through input from people in recovery, SAMHSA identified four support dimensions of recovery: health, home, purpose and community. This rule speaks to purpose, which is defined as meaningful daily activities. Purpose is a value of most recovery residence cultures. How purpose is structured varies greatly across recovery residences, especially across levels of support.

Evaluation

Are residents are encouraged to do at least one of the following: Work, go to school, or volunteer outside of the residence; Participate in mutual aid or caregiving; Participate in social, physical or creative activities; Participate in daily or weekly community activities; or Participate in daily or weekly programming?
