Guidance
Informal activities and interactions between residents and staff include a wide variety of examples such as celebrating a “recovery birthday” or hanging outside at the smoker’s table or chatting while shucking crawfish. Some of the best recovery conversations happen during informal interactions.
Due to ethical boundaries, some clinical professionals may not be able to participate in informal activities. Because most recovery residences are nonclinical and do not have clinical staff, this is typically not a barrier. Where it is a barrier, the recovery residence must ensure these activities and interactions are facilitated.
Evaluation
Are residents and staff encouraged to engage in informal activities?
Evidence
Evidence that this rule is upheld should be documented in the resident packet, leadership manual, and accreditation interview.
