NARR Standard 3.0: 3.H.26. Maintain a respectful environment

At its most basic level, maintaining a respectful environment is fostering a family-like environment, reflecting the psychological sense of community4 and social model (physical environment; authority base; staff role). The community culture is positive, recovery-oriented, and strengths-based. Residents move from thinking about the individual to supporting one another in their needs. This extends from staff interactions with residents, resident’s interactions with leadership and staff, and resident interactions with one another. Additionally, operator knowledge about trauma-informed care and promoting resiliency provides a toolkit to facilitate a respectful, safe environment.44 — NARR Standard 3.0 Compendium

The standard is upheld by the following rules:

  • 3.H.26.a. Evidence that staff and residents model genuineness, empathy and positive regard.
  • 3.H.26.b. Evidence that trauma informed or resilience-promoting practices are a priority.
  • 3.H.26.c. Evidence that mechanisms exist for residents to inform and help guide operations and advocate for community-building.
