Principle: Managing stress reduces the likelihood and intensity of conflicts.
Promise: Effective stress management leads to clearer thinking and calmer interactions.
Playbook:
- Identify Stressors: Recognize the common stressors in your environment that may trigger conflicts, such as workload pressures, personal issues, or lack of resources. Awareness is the first step to managing them.
- Use Relaxation Techniques: Teach and practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or mindfulness meditation. Regular use of these techniques can help reduce overall stress levels.
- Maintain Physical Health: Encourage regular exercise, adequate sleep, and healthy eating. Physical well-being significantly impacts stress levels and, consequently, the ability to handle conflicts.
- Seek Support: Promote a culture where seeking help is seen as a strength, not a weakness. Ensure that staff and residents know where to go for support, whether it’s a counselor, a support group, or even a trusted colleague.
- Apply Stress-Reducing Strategies During Conflicts: Specifically apply stress management techniques in conflict situations to prevent escalation. For example, taking a brief time-out to regroup can be highly effective.
Prompt: Over the next week, track the moments when you feel stressed and note what triggered those feelings. Apply at least one stress-reducing technique immediately after recognizing a stressor. Reflect on how this affects your mood and interactions throughout the day.
