Principle: Restoration goes beyond resolving a conflict to fully restore relationships.
Promise: Pursuing restoration of relationships can lead to a stronger, more united recovery community.
Playbook:
- Understand the Depth of the Issue: Identify the underlying issues and emotions that contributed to the conflict. Restoration often requires addressing these deeper concerns.
- Allow for Full Expression of Feelings: Create a safe space where all parties can express their feelings about the conflict without fear of judgment. This expression is crucial for moving past any hurt caused by the conflict.
- Encourage Mutual Understanding: Facilitate a dialogue that helps each party understand the other’s perspective. This understanding can build empathy and pave the way for genuine forgiveness and restoration.
- Facilitate a Genuine Apology: Encourage those involved to offer sincere apologies where appropriate. A genuine apology can be a powerful step towards mending relationships.
- Monitor the Healing Process: Restoration can be a lengthy process. Continuously check in with all parties involved to support and guide them through their healing journey.
Prompt: Think of a conflict that has been resolved but where the relationship has not been fully restored. Using the steps in the Playbook, outline a plan to move towards restoration. Consider what actions would be necessary from each party involved to achieve a complete restoration of the relationship.
